I’ve been advised by my program director to nail down an employment contract – negotiated and executed – many months prior to completing my training? What’s the rush?

There are some very good reasons to work toward the goal of having an employment contract executed 12-6 months prior to completion of training. For instance, if you are moving to a new state, you will need to obtain a license to practice in that state.

I’ve heard that a letter of intent is non-legally binding. If that’s true, then why should I ask prospective partners or employees to sign one?

Some may view a letter of intent as a “casual/non-binding” document, however certain provisions within the document may have legal effect. Many letters of intent state that the parties agree to engage in good faith negotiations of the terms of the definitive agreements.

If I chose to go into specialty practice, are there additional business risks beyond what I’d encounter in a primary care practice?

Unlike a primary care practice where the patient is the only customer, a specialty practice has two customers—the patients and the primary care practices who refer their patients to them. The primary care practice referral network can be the lifeline or death-knell of a specialty practice.
